Details

Tūtaekurī River is a significant waterway that winds gracefully through the heart of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, beginning high in the Kaweka Range and flowing eastward to the Pacific Ocean near Napier. Its diverse character ranges from rugged, remote upper sections to more accessible lower reaches, offering varied and pleasant scenery throughout its nearly 100-kilometre length. The river's course was notably altered by the powerful 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, which created its current outlet. It holds deep cultural importance for local Māori, particularly Ngāti Paarau, who have long valued it for sustenance and trade.

Visitors to the Tūtaekurī River can enjoy an array of activities amidst its natural charm. It stands out as a premier destination for anglers, boasting over 130 kilometres of fishable water teeming with wild rainbow and brown trout, including large sea-run brown trout in the lower reaches. Enthusiasts can explore easy cycling and walking paths along the Hawke's Bay Trails Water Ride, connecting areas such as Puketapu to the Waitangi Estuary. Kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities are also available, with a documented Grade 3 paddling section for those seeking a more adventurous experience. The river's mouth, forming a shared estuary, is recognised as a valuable birdwatching area.

This captivating river is particularly well-suited for outdoor adventurers, keen anglers, and nature lovers. It appeals to those looking for excellent trout fishing, from easily accessible spots to more challenging wilderness angling experiences. Families and cyclists will appreciate the gentle trails and picnic areas, while more experienced paddlers can tackle the river's rapids. The blend of scenic beauty, recreational pursuits, and profound cultural significance makes the Tūtaekurī River an appealing natural attraction for a wide range of visitors to the Hawke's Bay region.

Handy spot for the lone long distance dog walker. Recovering from widespread cyclone damage which wrecked all the redevelopment of the previous year. Will need at least another year, weather willing, to recover. Stop bank runs from waiohiki bridge to Awatoto making it a handy conduit for cyclists.

Awesome swim holes. But beware..... humans have dumped heaps of household junk in the tracks. So sad. Such pigs. There was a dead goat under the Willows that lay in the river. Please do not swim near those areas unless you have checked under there. Current was not strong
