Eskdale Park is a tranquil rural community park, spanning 12.5 hectares with approximately 8 hectares readily accessible to the public, nestled beside the picturesque Esk River in Hawke's Bay. This lovely reserve, once part of Hedgeley Station, was generously gifted to the community and is celebrated for its spacious, peaceful atmosphere, abundant mature trees, and unspoilt natural environment. It stands out as a genuine hidden gem, offering a unique blend of country charm whilst remaining conveniently close to local communities.
While the park sustained extensive damage from Cyclone Gabrielle in May 2023, necessitating a period of closure, it has since been meticulously recontoured, regrassed, and partially restored. Now open for pedestrian access in a limited capacity, visitors can enjoy basic recreation spaces and a small play area. The park provides direct access to popular river swimming spots in the Esk River, although caution is advised due to potential cyclone debris. Furthermore, it remains a designated cycle-free zone, making it particularly appealing for leisurely strolls and exercising dogs off-leash.
This park is ideally suited for families seeking safe, open spaces for children to play and explore, and for dog walkers who appreciate a dedicated area for their pets. It serves as a perfect location for peaceful outings, casual picnics, and gentle walks, appealing to anyone desiring quiet relaxation amidst nature. Its overall appeal lies in providing a cherished country experience for local residents and visitors alike, away from the bustle, fostering a sense of community and connection with the natural world.
