Art Deco Napier City Walk offers a captivating journey through a city uniquely rebuilt in the fashionable styles of the 1930s. Following a devastating earthquake in 1931, Napier embraced Art Deco and Spanish Mission architecture, resulting in one of the world's most concentrated and well-preserved collections of buildings from that era. The city centre, particularly around Emerson and Tennyson Streets, exudes a distinct character, transporting visitors back in time with its cohesive visual identity. This remarkable urban reconstruction stands out for its architectural unity and the seamless streetscape it presents, creating an immersive historical atmosphere.

Visitors can embark on either guided or self-guided walks, often commencing with an informative film detailing the 1931 earthquake and Napier's subsequent rebuild. The walks showcase an array of architectural features, including geometric patterns, sunburst motifs, and streamlined forms, alongside vibrant pastel colours and decorative detailing. Notable structures and the stories behind them are highlighted, sometimes featuring authentic Māori motifs integrated into the Art Deco designs, adding a unique local flavour. Expert guides from the Art Deco Trust provide rich historical and architectural context, enhancing the touring experience.

This fascinating walk appeals greatly to enthusiasts of history and architecture, as well as anyone seeking an engaging cultural experience. The city's flat terrain and compact layout make it particularly accessible for exploration on foot, facilitating close observation of the intricate design elements. Ideal for both brief visits and more extended stays, the Art Deco Napier City Walk provides a balanced blend of education and visual pleasure, connecting visitors deeply with the region's compelling heritage. It serves as a testament to resilience and offers a truly distinctive insight into a pivotal period of design.

Absolutely rate this if you want to learn some more about Napier and its art deco architecture. It starts with a movie about the earthquake which was really interesting. The walk and talk was really educational and taught us all a thing or two including ‘look up’ it’s amazing what we had been missing walking around here other days!
Really impressed.

Devastated by the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake Napier was rebuilt in the contemporary Art Deco style giving the city a unique flavour and preserving some incredible examples of Art Deco architecture. We didn't go on an organised tour because the city centre is relatively small.

Interesting experience, that takes you back to the Art Deco Time. All this buildings are so different from our modern architecture, that it is amazing to feel that era in an air.
All shops on your way are full of different art deco souvenirs and paintings not limited to that as well.
