Duart House is a distinguished historic wooden mansion, erected in 1882 for Allan and Hannah McLean, offering a charming insight into colonial New Zealand life in Hawke's Bay. Its character is defined by its two-storied structure and a distinctive tower with crenellations, initially designed to evoke memories of Duart Castle on Scotland's Isle of Mull, from where the McLean family originated. The property, nestled at 51 Duart Road in Havelock North, is set within three acres of beautifully maintained formal gardens, providing a serene and picturesque atmosphere that truly stands out for visitors seeking both historical intrigue and natural beauty.
Guests can explore the house, which functions as both a museum and a venue, with the ground floor often hosting elegant functions such as weddings and meetings. Upstairs, the museum showcases a collection of pre-1920s furniture, artefacts, and paintings by local artist George Thompson Pritchard, providing a tangible connection to the past. Beyond the main house, the extensive gardens are a highlight, renowned for their horticultural landscaping and featuring a croquet lawn, with diverse flora offering excellent photographic opportunities throughout the year. The gardens are open to the public at all times, whilst the house itself welcomes visitors on the first Sunday of each month between 10 am and 12 pm, unless previously booked for an event.
This elegant estate is particularly suited for history enthusiasts and those with an appreciation for colonial architecture and heritage. Garden lovers and keen photographers will also find much to admire within the meticulously cared-for grounds, which invite leisurely strolls and peaceful reflection. Duart House offers an ideal backdrop for private functions, such as intimate weddings or significant celebrations, appealing to those seeking a unique and historic setting for their special occasion. Overall, it serves as a tranquil retreat and a valuable community asset, preserving a rich segment of Hawke's Bay's past for contemporary enjoyment.

Personal feelings about this is...if it's survived every earthquake since construction....hasn't it proved it's quality of design and endurance.
So sad such beautiful buildings lie empty and unloved 💕.
There ought to be something like the UK National Trust to ensure preservation and enjoyment of NZ landmark buildings. I wonder if the Landmark Trust could be enticed to take an interest?
