Details

Hastings Clock Tower stands as a distinguished public landmark in the heart of Hastings, Hawke's Bay, embodying a spirit of civic resilience and architectural elegance. Completed in 1935 and designed by local architect Sydney Chaplin, this Art Deco masterpiece was created to restore the familiar clock chime to the city centre and enhance its aesthetic appeal. It serves as a powerful symbol of urban renewal following the devastating 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, reflecting the region's remarkable recovery and the prevalent architectural style of the era. Its prominent location within the central business district makes it an easily recognisable and celebrated feature of the cityscape, a source of considerable local pride.

This striking tower features four distinct clock faces and melodious chiming bells, providing a functional and auditory presence in Hastings. An excellent example of mid-1930s Art Deco Moderne, the tower's base includes two plaques, installed in 1995, that respectfully list the names of those who tragically lost their lives in the 1931 earthquake. Visitors often enjoy its vibrant appearance, particularly the colourful display after dusk, and the opportunity to capture unique photographs, especially when trains pass by. Recognised for its historical importance, the tower holds a Category 1 listing with Heritage New Zealand, and its facade received a pastel colour palette refresh in 2022.

The Hastings Clock Tower appeals significantly to those with an interest in local history and the enduring spirit of community, particularly concerning the earthquake and subsequent rebuilding efforts. It is an ideal spot for enthusiasts of Art Deco architecture and visitors wishing to appreciate a significant civic landmark. This site offers a peaceful respite in downtown Hastings and is particularly well-suited for photography buffs seeking iconic shots, including those incorporating the nearby railway. The tower's central role in annual earthquake memorial services further underscores its profound community significance and broader appeal as a symbol of remembrance and triumph.

A significant landmark from my childhood. Went to visit it on 15 May 2026, but the space around it was undergoing renovations. Good to see the area is maintained and improved though.

Pretty old clock tower in the middle of Hastings. Quite well looked after with sheep sculptures. The big apple project around the middle of town is cool to spot and see. Minimal clock tower signage but atleast it was telling the right time. Neat little bit of history for the east coast.

Very colourful at night . Took a couple in the daytime and at night . Unfortunate the view from the car park is blocked by one tree . It would only take one skilled chainsaw operator 10min , tree on , no damage done and a fantastic view of the clock tower from the car park . Just needs the local council to get off there arse and take out one tree so the locals and visitors to the town can admire a work of beauty

It's a wonderful place to come even when I'll been away for 15 years. Home sweet home.

Another fantastic spot to take a photo of trains heading through this one of a kind water feature. Over the years, the Clock Tower has been another one of those popular places to get a photo of a train. The perfect time to get one is a mid-morning to lunchtime shot with the train heading through. The train has to be heading Northbound to get it spot on. This also means you get the Clock Tower poking out behind the trees. Highly recommended for any Rail Enthusiast's Wank Bank on their computer, aka, a Foamer Bank
