Details

Pākōwhai Regional Park offers a charming country-style reserve experience, ideally positioned close to Hastings and a short drive from Napier. This distinctive park, though the smallest of the regional parks, is arguably the most beloved, providing a vital green space for the community. It presents an attractive, rural setting, acting as an ecological island where people and their canine companions can enjoy ample open space. Established in 1973, the park features a delightful blend of mature and newly planted trees, expansive grass areas, tranquil wetlands, and stop banks.

Wandering through the park, visitors will discover approximately two kilometres of easy paths, gracefully traversed by small bridges over the Raupare Stream. A dedicated agility course lies at the heart of the park, a particular favourite for dogs, which explains its local moniker, 'The Dog Park'. Among the appealing features are specimen trees, a pine plantation, and carved seats fashioned from storm-felled timber, adding unique touches to the landscape. The wetlands and regenerating native bush attract native birds such as tūī and bellbirds, while the stream provides a habitat for eels and trout.

This park is particularly well-suited for dog owners seeking a secure, off-leash environment for their pets, along with families and individuals looking for pleasant country walks. The short, often flat, loops of the paths are ideal for quick strolls, and picnic areas offer perfect spots for family outings. With convenient access, ample parking, and essential facilities including a composting toilet, Pākōwhai Regional Park delivers a welcoming and accessible escape into nature for everyone, including those on four legs.

This is an excellent, safe place to let your dog/dogs run free meet their doggy friends pick up their premails send the odd reply, have a swim in the stream. Doggy owners can catch up with others and have chat.

Great experience. Loved the mature trees, dog training gadgets. Dogs loved a free run, play with other dogs. Going in the water. We all had a great time and went back 2 days later.
